Remembering the Bombay rains

Monsoon rain
Watching the rain from our 3rd floor apt in Lokhandwala, Bombay

Remembering the endless rains on July 26th 2005, when we lived in Bombay. We had moved there at the beginning of the year and this was our first experience of the famed Bombay monsoon rain. For me it was a lot of fun, especially since by then I had started working from home, so loved watching and enjoying the rains from the safety and security of my home, with a cup of coffee in my hand.

July 26th started as a regular day and when it started to rain it wasn't any different from any other monsoon day, but with the combination of high tide which led to the drains being closed and a non-stop rain for hours on end, there was no where for the water to go.

Pretty soon the road outside our apartment complex, Tarapore Gardens in Lokhandwala was flooded, then the electricity was shut off by Reliance Power to prevent short circuits and we were left without much news about the rain. My hubby's office was nearby in Laxmi Industrial Estate and he managed to drive through the flooded New Link Road, without too much damage...or so we thought. Here's a post I wrote about what happened to our brand new car and how we got it fixed after it's starter got rusted thanks to the flooding.

We were without power for almost 24 hours, but luckily had enough candles, matches and batteries to be OK. And we had enough food and milk to manage on as well, until one could go to the stores. The items that were flying off the shelves in markets were Maggi noodle packs, Nestle milk tetra packs and candles. Since then, I've always had a good supply of these items in my home at all times.

Here's a few other interesting posts I wrote about the rains that year.

Rained out Mumbai
Bombay Blues
Tales of Courage

And here are more photos from our apartment in Bombay.

The green of the plants looks more lush against the backdrop of the grey rains. I am in Bombay now and thoroughly enjoying the weather!

shilpa, Yup, we were there! I suppose it was a once in a lifetime experience.

hw, Yes, that day was unending. We were lucky that we were not affected too much by it.

Enjoy the rains!

Monsoon in India is lovely. I've been in Mumbai once, long ago, during heavy rain, and remember walking with a cousin in knee deep water in the middle of the road. It was so much fun when we were kids and didn't know what might be in the water! ;) Nice pictures.

bindu, Lol, yes exactly...it's fun as long as you're young enough not to know what all is in that water! The road outside our complex always used to get flooded and it was fun to watch people wading and having fun from my windows!
