Which travel and reference sites do you use?

Of the four big travel and reference sites, which do you use the most/like the most? The four big ones are: Fodor's, Rough Guides, Frommer's and Lonely Planet. Have you decided to visit a place based on the recommendation of one of these guides? We generally use personal references when deciding where to visit but use sites such as these to decide the specifics of where to stay or what to see in the area.

I like all four of these sites and use them as reference points for a lot of my travel writing as well, but my favorite one is Rough Guides which I find to be very detailed, but also very short and sweet in its information. I don't want to know every facet of history of the place I am going to, just enough to get me hooked on to going there and that's it.

I agree that you want a travel guide that makes you keen to visit that destination rather than great detail of every facet of history, everything you can do and see. When I write destination guides for my site I hope that I can make the reader enthusiastic, curious and excited about visiting that place.

That's the beauty of an online guide that you have links to more information for any reader that wants to find our more detailed information about a specific topic.

Thanks for stoppying by Karen!

Yes, that's exactly my point as well. A travel guide must only pique the interest of the reader, and open their mind to new adventures rather than be a history lesson.

Interesting blog, Shalini. I tried to contact you through your Weaver blog, but there's an error on the page. I thought you might want to know about this...

Best,

Lynda

PS--Read your profile. I'm a Gemini too!

Hi Lynda,
Thanks for visiting!!
The Contact Me page is linked togther for both my blogs, so it automatically takes you to the one on this site. I need to separate them as it causes too much confusion, I think.

Hey Lynda,

I've delinked the contact me page from weaver for now!! I know there's a large gap at the top of the contact page, but that doesn't seem to go away no matter what I do!

Thanks for letting me know though.
