ICRIER to study impact of large retailers on mom-and-pop stores

The Prime Minister’s Office has requested that the impact of large retail chains be studied, for which the commerce and industry ministry has appointed ICRIER to make a report on the effect of large retailers on the domestic retail industry. The study will focus on how large domestic retailers and international firms like Wal-Mart and Tesco will affect the market. The study will be conducted in relation to how it affects farmers, employment, dislocation, prices as well as the small-scale industry. Kamal Nath, the commerce and industry minister stressed that this study was for understanding and differentiating the impact of large vs small retailers and not foreign vs domestic retailers.
