What is VoIP?

I have been using a VoIP phone connection since the beginning of the year for my work which involves lots of long distance and international calling. VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol and simply put it is the routing of voice communication through the Internet or other IP based systems. VoIP is often also referred to as IP Telephony, Internet telephony and Broadband phone, all of which refer to the same system.

Although it has been around for quite some time, it was first used as an experiment by the Network Voice Protocol who invented it for the ARPANET in 1973. There are several advantages to using a VoIP phone especially the lower cost which is possible as networks are used to carry both voice and data and better connectivity. In general VoIP to VoIP calls are free on any provider. The field of VoIP technology is changing and growing at a rapid pace.
